About this station
In 1964, when the BBC played little pop music and commercial radio was illegal in Britain, Radio Caroline started broadcasting from a ship anchored in international waters off the English coast. Its founder, Ronan O'Rahilly, gave a generation the music it wanted, and the pirate stations that followed changed British radio for good.
The ships, most famously the Ross Revenge, became part of the legend: storms, raids and years of broadcasting against the odds. Today Caroline is a legitimate station, run largely by volunteers, and its sound is album rock: deep cuts and classics from the sixties onward, chosen by presenters who care about the records, not a chart.
When it's best
Long drives, the garage, and anyone who misses rock radio that played whole sides of albums.
