About this station
KEXP grew out of KCMU, the University of Washington's student station, and became KEXP in 2001. It is non-commercial and listener-powered, and its reputation rests on one simple idea: the DJs choose the music.
That means a morning show can go from a new Seattle indie band to Nigerian highlife to a classic hip-hop track, and the person on the microphone can tell you why. Specialty shows cover punk, reggae, Latin alternative, jazz, electronic music and more. KEXP's in-studio live sessions, filmed and shared online, have introduced millions of people to artists before they broke.
When it's best
Whenever you want to discover something. Leave it on for an afternoon and you'll have a list of new bands.
